Self-Connection
This exercise comes from Sharon Fraquemont’s You Already Know What to Do. (…coming soon, an audio example; must convert the cassette to mp3; OR, it may be time to repeat this exercise, as it’s been years.)
I share with you my memory, making no claims on this being the exact exercise, but it is what I did.
First, leave your house when it is still dark, around 5am. Walk, or drive, to a favorite hilly spot with view of the soon-to-rise sun. You should be alone, while most of the world is still asleep. Bring a notebook, a pen, and a recording device.
After you’ve found your “spot”, sit, listen, and come into the present.
Begin writing your “love letter to the soul” when you feel moved to put pen to paper. You don’t need to know what to say, or what the word “soul” means (or you can pick another more fitting word for you, for that matter). The voice that comes to the surface should not sound like your day-to-day voice. If a question comes to mind that feels pertinent, ask it. An answer may or may not come in words.
When I did this exercise, the voice that emerged was unusually loving (that’s how I knew it was not contrived). A “protector”, perhaps she was my Ally, Guardian Spirit, or Spirit Guide of sorts, she spoke without an ounce of judgement while letting me know she would keep me safe from harm, and other things I needed to hear. I felt as if I was voicing a “vow” of self-connection from a deeper part of me to the rest of me.
Poet-bard David Whyte wrote a book “The Three Marriages” in which he emphasizes the importance of balancing the “marriages” of Work, Spouse, and Self. If one marriage is off, there is most likely trouble.
Once you’ve written the letter, record it out loud in the tone it was expressed (this is important). That’s all there is to it. Then, whenever you’re driving, or driving yourself crazy, or when feeling fine, press the play- back button and listen to your letter, several times a day, if you want.
I think it’s a great way to affirm yourself, tap your “inner” resource, your very own Spirit Guide, by birthright, essentially free of charge.
With so many GOODS FOR SALE, it can seem that we have nothing inside, that all that’s good must be bought. A Capitalist conditioned poverty-of-being, retail therapy and all.
Okay, you’ve convinced me, I need to do this again. Check back soon for an audio example.
Hope to hear from you.
